Потом были The Beatles, но это совершенно особенная история, которая требует сотен страниц и несуществующих в человеческом языке эпитетов и определений. Оставим этот нелегкий труд более отважным людям, отметив лишь, что тяга к самостоятельности проявилась у Маккартни еще до черной весны семидесятого: в 66-м он пишет музыку к фильму The Family Way, а в ноябре 69-го делает черновые наброски альбома McCartney.
В том же 69-м он женится на американской журналистке Линде Истмен. Их отношения сразу вышли за рамки обыденных представлений о браке (да и могло ли быть иначе!): сначала Линда помогла мужу с McCartney (вокальные партии), затем, в 71-м, записала с ним отменную пластинку Ram и вошла в состав (в качестве клавишника и вокалистки) еще одной великой группы Пола — Wings. Первый альбом «Крыльев», Wild Life, был более чем сдержанно принят критикой, но поклонников это не смутило: гастроли Wings в начале семидесятых — один из самых светлых моментов в биографии сэра Пола. Wings просуществовали до весны 81-го, записав дюжину альбомов — один краше другого. Это не был «аккомпанирующий состав», что неоднократно подчеркивалось самим Маккартни: «Крылья» представляли собой уникальный живой организм, одинаково комфортно чувствующий себя как в студии, так и на открытых площадках.
В течение следующих пятнадцати лет Маккартни выпускает полтора десятка альбомов (пресса морщится, поклонники в восторге). В девяностых он обращается к классической музыке: в 91 г. выходит «Ливерпульская оратория», написанная к 150-летию Королевского филармонического общества Ливерпуля; в 95-м — пьеса для фортепиано A Leaf; еще один классический диск, Standing Stone, музыкант записывает в 1997 году.
17 апреля 1998 года в Тасконе, Аризона, умирает Линда. Тяжелейшее испытание для любого человека, для Пола, у которого в 1956-м от того же заболевания скончалась мать, особенно. На все вопросы журналистов Маккартни отвечал так: «Это конец»… И все же это было очередным началом. В 1998 году его номинируют на «Грэмми», а королева Елизавета II посвящает музыканта в рыцари. В 99-м Маккартни принимают в «Зал славы рок-н-ролла» (Кливленд, Огайо). Тогда же Пол выпускает сборник в оркестровой аранжировке (Paul McCartney’s Working Classical); альбом-посвящение заканчивается минутной пьесой The Lovely Linda, впервые прозвучавшей на диске семидесятого года McCartney, одной из самых пронзительных и воздушных баллад, когда-либо сочиненных музыкантом.
Следующие три сольных пластинки — Run Devil Run (1999), Driving Rain (2001) и Chaos and Creation in the Backyard (2005) — стали своего рода музыкальным переосмыслением последних четырех десятилетий и закономерно привели сэра Пола к нарочно минималистской, очень традиционной классической Ecce Cor Meum (2006) — заочному диалогу великого композитора настоящего с величайшими композиторами прошлого.
