После они выпустили ещё одно демо - уже в 2000 году. В демо вошли песни Lips of Deceit, We Come Out at Night и песни с предыдущего демо.
Первый альбом группы, носящий название Sounding the Seventh Trumpet (2001), был выпущен на их первом официальном лейбле Good Life Recordings, когда металкор (стиль, в котором выдержан альбом) как жанр только начал зарождаться.
В группе тогда ещё не было лид-гитариста, но необходимость в нём уже чувствовалась — Заки был лишь ритм-гитаристом, но не солистом. Тогда The Rev позвал в группу участника своей группы Pinkly Smooth, Синистера Гейтса (Synyster Gates). После того, как лид-гитарист присоединился к группе (сразу после записи альбома в 2000 году), вступительный трек To End the Rapture был перезаписан с Гейтсом, и альбом был переиздан в 2002 году уже под крылом новой звукозаписывающей компании — Hopeless Records.
Следующий альбом, названный Waking the Fallen (2003), был также издан на Hopeless Records и отмечен хорошими отзывами в журнале Rolling Stone. Это был первый альбом, записанный группой в «Золотом составе». Сразу после релиза Avenged Sevenfold подписали контракт с Warner Bros. Records.
Следующий релиз — альбом City of Evil (5 июня 2005 года) стал своеобразным переходом группы от одного стиля к другому. Вокалист A7X M. Shadows почти полностью отказался от так называемого «скриминга» в пользу пения. Гитарные партии стали звучать намного жёстче и техничнее, в классическом метал-стиле. Альбом получил статус «золотого» в январе 2006 года и был представлен на 63 месте в журнале «Guitar World» в номинации «Top-100 величайших гитарных альбомов».
Одноимённый альбом группы Avenged Sevenfold был издан 19 октября 2007 года, дебютировав сразу на четвёртой позиции Billboard 200. Avenged Sevenfold сразу же был раскуплен в количестве 94000 копий. Это был последний альбом, записанный в «Золотом составе».
16 сентября 2008 года состоялся выпуск нового концертного DVD группы Live in the LBC & Diamonds in the Rough. Альбом состоит из 2 частей: Live in the LBC — это живое выступление, а Diamonds in the Rough — это, по сути, название нового альбома.
Летом 2009 года альбом Waking the Fallen продаётся тиражом в 500000 копий и получает золотой статус RIAA, о чём объявляет M. Shadows на сайте и на страничке MySpace. Также было сказано, что группа находится в творческом процессе и приступает к началу записи альбома. Со слов Сандерса, группа решила немного отойти от фанатского комьюнити ради записи альбома — так же проходил творческий процесс во время записи City of Evil.
28 декабря 2009 года ударник Джеймс Салливан был найден мёртвым в своём собственном доме. Полиция отрицает версию убийства. Вызов поступил от пожарных, которые по просьбе родственников попали в дом Салливана около часа дня. Причиной смерти стала случайная передозировка лекарств и алкоголя.
18 февраля 2010 года участниками группы было сообщено, что запись нового альбома пройдёт вместе с барабанщиком группы Dream Theater Майком Портным. Позднее это подтвердил и сам Майк Портной.
18 мая 2010 года вышел сингл из грядущего альбома, песня Nightmare.
27 июля 2010 года вышел альбом Nightmare и попал на позицию №1 в США, сместив с первой строчки Billboard 200 новый альбом Eminem.
16 декабря 2010 года Майк объявил, что он больше не будет работать с Avenged Sevenfold. Группа опубликовала заявление на своем сайте на 17 декабря 2010 о том, что Майк Портной не останется в коллективе на постоянной основе.
По окончанию 2010 года Майк Портной покинул группу.
20 января 2011 года Avenged Sevenfold назвал имя нового сессионного барабанщика — Arin Ilejay (ex-Confide).
Вместе с ним был записан альбом Hail to the King(2013)
В июле 2015 года участники группы объявили в Твиттере об уходе Эрина из коллектива.
