Элла была воспитана матерью-одиночкой в штате Нью-Йорк. В 17 лет дебютировала на сцене нью-йоркского театра Аполло. «Первая леди песни» продолжала выступать до конца 1980-х. В 1993 г. у Эллы Фитцджералд были ампутированы обе ноги, она практически ослепла.
