В 1961 году Джеймс стал посещать академию Milton Academy в Милтоне - к тому времени его увлечение фолк-музыкой и прочими жанрами было уже довольно-таки стойким (будущий профессионал постоянно слушал фольклорные композиции, блюзы и прочее).
Свою первую песню Джеймс Тейлор написал в четырнадцатилетнем возрасте и тогда же продолжил совершенствовать собственные навыки и умения.
Позже – в Северной Каролине - музыкант проучился в течение некоторого времени в школе Chapel Hill High School. Приблизительно в тот же период музыкант вошел в состав группы The Corsayers, которую создал его брат Алекс. В музыкальном коллективе Джеймс Тэйлор (James Taylor) талантливо играл на гитаре.
Вернувшись в Милтон, Джеймс оказался в депрессии – ему трудно давалось расставание с друзьями и единомышленниками. В 1965 году музыкант попал в госпиталь в Бельмонте, где в течение некоторого времени восстанавливался.
В семидесятые годы началось восхождение Джеймса Тэйлора (James Taylor) по карьерной лестнице. Тогда же пришло признание. В начале восьмидесятых в свет вышел в свет альбом Dad Loves His Work, который оказался не просто очередным этапом в творческой жизни музыканта, но и чрезвычайно успешным проектом. В конце восьмидесятых Тэйлор записал Never Die Young. Тогда же он начал активно гастролировать.
