Первые же пластинки оказались невероятно успешными, особенно сочинения Фогерти "Гордая Мэри" (Proud Mary), "Восход дурной луны" (Bad Moon Rising), "На углу" (Down on the Corner), "Сынок-счастливчик" (Fortunate Son). После мощного дебюта группа шла от одного триумфа к другому. Все альбомы «Криденс» становились «золотыми», причем лавры по праву доставались Джону, который был автором не только композиций, но и аранжировок. Впрочем, биография группы оказалась краткой: в 1971 году ее со скандалом покинул Том, после чего трио в 1972 году распалось.
Оставшись в одиночестве, Фогерти доказал, что способен добиваться успеха самостоятельно. В 1973 году он выпустил альбом вымышленного фолк-рок-квартета «Блю-Ридж рейнджерс» (Blue Ridge Rangers), для которого записал и смикшировал все инструментальные и вокальные партии. Однако, посчитав, что «Фэнтэзи» эксплуатирует его талант, музыкант вскоре порвал с фирмой. «Развод» оказался нелегким, и сольная карьера Фогерти, начавшись многообещающим успехом, в середине 1970-х годов была прервана. Изнурительные судебные тяжбы – не только с «Фэнтэзи», но и с менеджерами группы «Криденс», – длившиеся почти десять лет, лишили Фогерти возможности выпускать свои старые сочинения и отнюдь не вдохновляли на создание новых. Лишь в 1985 году он выпустил наконец новый альбом Центровой (Centerfield), который сразу возглавил хит-парады.
