Взлёт популярности Пита Сигера в мейнстриме был пресечён набиравшей популярность политикой маккартизма. Дело в том, что до 1949 года Сигер состоял в Коммунистической партии США. Затем он стал выступать против сталинизма, но по-прежнему придерживался левых убеждений.
С конца 1950-х Пит Сигер снова стал появляться на сцене. С этого времени он исполняет такие известные песни, как «Where Have All the Flowers Gone?», «If I Had a Hammer (The Hammer Song)», «Turn, Turn, Turn!» и народную «We Shall Overcome», которая стала настоящим гимном движения за права человека в США.
