Бадди Холли помог Дженнингсу сделать первые записи, после чего взял его с собой в тур в качестве бас-гитариста. 3 февраля 1959 г., возвращаясь с очередного концерта в Аризоне, Дженнингс уступил свое место в самолете простуженному Джайлсу Ричардсону, тем самым избежав смерти. Крушение этого рейса привело к гибели всех находившихся на борту и вошло в историю как "день, когда умерла музыка". После этого Дженнингс работал на радио в Аризоне, сформировал группу The Waylors и записывался на независимых лейблах Trend Record и А&М Records, позже перейдя на RCA Victor. В течение 1970-х Дженнингс участвует в создании нового направления в кантри-музыке: outlaw country. Он выпускает тепло принятые публикой и критиками альбомы Lonesome, On'ry and Mean и Honky Tonk Heroes, за которыми последовали не менее успешные Dreaming My Dreams и Are You Ready for the Country.
