Под патронажем менеджера группы Джона Кроутера музыканты отправились в старинное местечко "Preston House", где в спартанской обстановке проводили время за репетициями и сочинением материала.
Благодаря своему первому синглу "Early Morning" команда получила возможность провести радиосессии у Джона Пила и затем заключила контракт с "EMI". С самого начала "BJH" экспериментировали с новыми формами, стараясь отойти от традиционного формата: гитара, бас, ударные. В своей музыке они использовали духовые и струнные инструменты, а с помощью меллотронов имитировали оркестровое звучание.
К записи дебютного альбома "Barclay James Harvest" привлекли настоящий оркестр и вместе с ним даже провели сопутствующие гастроли. Коллектив продолжил успешные изыскания по сплаву рока и классики на пластинках "Once again" и "Barclay James Harvest And Other Short Stories". Амбициозные выступления группы приводили публику в экстаз, а тем временем отношения "BJH" с "EMI" постепенно разлаживались. После "Baby James Harvest" музыканты перебрались на "Polydor", где их ждал больший коммерческий успех. В 1974-м вышел двойной концертный альбома "Barclay James Harvest Live", который впервые попал в чарты. Британские гастроли "BJH" неизменно проходили с аншлагами, а команда тем временем открывала для себя новые территории, посещая с концертами Германию и США.
Альбом 1977 года "Gone To Earth" закрепился в немецких чартах, а "EMI", видя успех бывших подопечных, взялась за переиздание бэк-каталога и выпуск заброшенного на полку сольного альбома Лиса. Все шло гладко, но в 1979-м Вулли заявил о своем уходе и начале сольной карьеры. Оставшееся трио продолжило работу, заткнув образовавшуюся брешь сессионными музыкантами. Теперь звучание "BJH" заметно полегчало, став более коммерческим, благодаря чему продажи дисков заметно увеличились.
Приобретая новых поклонников, коллектив между тем терял старых, что в середине 80-х заставило музыкантов призадуматься и сделать паузу. Длительное молчание было нарушено альбомом "Face To Face", на котором Barclay James Harvest вернулись к оригинальному звучанию. Вскоре после этого группа прорвалась за "железный занавес" и отыграла грандиозный концерт в Восточном Берлине, запечатленный на пластинке "Glasnost". Свое 25-летие коллектив отметил серьезным европейским туром и выпуском сборника "Best Of". К сожалению, очередная студийная работа оказалась слабоватой, и Barclay James Harvest были "изгнаны" из "Polydor UK". Положение осложнилось судебными разбирательствами с бывшим аранжировщиком Робертом Годфри.
Тяжбы закончились к весне 1995-го, а спустя год группа заключила контракт с немецким "Polydor". Альбом "River Of Dreams" стал последним релизом единого "BJH". После его выхода на свет появилось два коллектива: "Barclay James Harvest Through The Eyes Of John Lees" с Джоном Лисом и Стюартом Волстенхольмом и "Barclay James Harvest Featuring Les Holroyd" с Лесом Холройдом и Мелом Притчардом. 28 января 2004 года Мел скончался от сердечного приступа. 13 декабря 2010 года из жизни ушёл Вулли.
