В 2001 году Camera Obscura попала в список «самых многообещающих групп», составлявшийся влиятельным английским радиоведущим Джоном Пилом. При поддержке Стюарта Мердока из Belle & Sebastian шотландские музыканты наконец-то смогли записать свой первый альбом, Biggest Bluest Hi-Fi (2002). Их вторая пластинка, Underachievers Please Try Harder (2003), выпущенная испанским лейблом Elefant, была замечена американским адептом инди-рока Merge Records и переиздана в 2004-м.
25 октября 2004 года Джон Пил, поддерживавший Camera Obscura практически с самого начала, скончался; в том же году из бэнда ушел Джон Хендерсон. Пережив эти удары, в Швеции, под присмотром продюсера Яри Хаапалайнена (Jari Haapalainen), группа записала третий и пока свой лучший альбом, Let’s Get Out of This Country (2006). Возможно, на стиль пластинки оказала работа над песнями на стихи Роберта Бернса для знаменитых Peel Sessions в 2004 году.
