В 1975 году Стрейт закончил службу в армии и вернулся к учебе, поступил в Юго-западный государственный университет Техаса, который закончил в 1979 году.
Музыкальная карьера
Во время учебы в университете играл в группе Ace in the Hole. Начиная с октября 1975 года группа играла в барах и кабаках южной и центральной части Техаса.
В конце 1970 годов группа выпустила пару синглов в хьюстонской студии. Стрейт завел дружбу с Эрвом Вулси, который держал один из баров, где выступала группа, а в прошлом работал в MCA Records. Вулси помог Джорджу и Ace in the Hole наладить контакт с лейблом. MCA были настолько впечатлены Джорджом, что тут же подписали контракт с группой.
