Ее детство прошло в городке Батчер Холлер, штат Кентукки. Отец тянул все семейство, работая днем в поле, а ночью — на шахте (название которой потом украсит обложку альбома Лоретты). Детство Линн длилось недолго. Когда девушке было всего четырнадцать, она встретила свою любовь и скоро пошла под венец. Семья была только рада, одним ртом стало меньше.
К 1961-му году Лоретта успела стать матерью четырех детей. И тогда никто даже не предполагал, что скромная милая женщина станет звездой кантри. Америке повезло, что Линн нашла хорошего мужа, поддержавшего увлечение жены музыкой. Повезло, что она не стала стесняться и пошла на телевизионный конкурс.
Там певицу заметил продюсер и сразу предложил сделать первую запись. Это была песня I’m A Honky Tonk Girl, ставшая хитом местных кантри-радиостанций. Немудреная история простой девчонки, спетая с характерным для провинции гнусавым прононсом. Но постепенно Лоретта пришла к собственной манере пения и перестала подражать таким сельским звездам, как Китти Уэллс и Эрнест Табб. И в 1962-м году ее сингл Success попал в десятку кантри-хитов Америки.
Лоретта на сцене уже сорок два года. Но и не думает об отставке. Подтверждение тому — ее последний альбом Van Lear Rose. Где удивительным образом смешались сонные деревенские мотивы, драйвовый рок-н-ролл и мощные, чуть ли не гранжевые, гитарные запилы. Вот вам и бабушка.
Продюсером пластинки стал Джек Уайт, благодаря которому музыка приобрела «народное» звучание. Будто слушаешь не современную стереосистему, а старенький музыкальный автомат из провинциального бара. Но музыка при этом вовсе не становится старомодной или примитивной — эффект прямо противоположный. Чувствуется сильное влияние блюза и даже хард-рока. Достаточно послушать Portland Oregon, чтобы избавиться от многих стереотипов.
Есть в Van Lear Rose и традиционное кантри. С бряканьем шпор и ритмом в раскачку. Хочешь быть настоящим ковбоем — слушай High On A Mountain Top. Живая классика.
Альбом очень биографичный, интимный и трогательный. Лоретта рассказывает в нем историю своей жизни. Где-то веселую, а где-то трагичную, от которой комок в горле. Это может быть баллада о женской тюрьме (Women’s Prison) или рассказ о превращении провинциальной девчонки в жену и мать четырех детей (Miss Being Mrs.). Вот она — настоящая Америка.
