На их дебютном альбоме soul идет под руку с прог-роком и проповедническими текстами. «It’s Complicated Being a Wizard» — перевалочный пункт между двумя остановками, в котором музыканты распаковали все имеющееся барахло, выпотрошили, просеяли и оставили только самое ценное. Из десятков своих песен, студийных наработок и неиспользованного материала они настругали от силы пятнадцать семплов, и превратили качество в количество, заполнив 46 минут звучания полученными короткими обрубками.
Это беспрерывное гипнотизирующее действо абсолютно несравнимо — разве что с мэш-апом, который Джордж Мартин вместе с сыном провернул над песнями The Beatles на пластинке «Love» здесь можно провести только еле видимую параллель. Каждый семпл здесь — мощнейший; их не стыдно пускать на десять минут по кругу, их можно с гордостью сочетать в разных пропорциях и с разными ритмами — то зверски изломанными, как в мясорубке, то прямыми, как под метроном. Portugal. The Man собрали эти звуки в шляпе с двойным дном и в первые 23 минуты с криком «але-оп!» поочередно вынимали и жонглировали как душе придется. Потом еще 23 минуты все то же самое повторяли, только разбив все представление на маленькие сценки, местами перетасовывая и меняя местами мелкие детальки. Казалось бы, к чему название «Быть волшебником — сложная штука», когда все просто и понятно: вот стоит иллюзионист, двойное дно, фокус старый, для изготовления чудила задействовал компьютер, семплер, секвенсер и драм-машинку — ничего запредельного. Да только, черт побери, волшебство все равно настоящее. И это штука непростая, как ни крути.
