Успех пришёл неожиданно. Во время выступления в лондонском клубе Хэтчетт их услышали известные в мире шоу-бизнеса композиторы Май Чепмен и Ники Чинн, которым понравилась слаженная игра коллектива.
Так на свет появилась группа Smokie. Был подписан контракт с фирмой "РЭК". Песни для ансамбля писали Чинн и Чепмен. В начале 1975 года выходит альбом "Pass It Around", а вскоре после него - "Changing All The Time". Композиции с этих альбомов занимают высокие места в хит-парадах.
Но у внезапного успеха оказалась и другая сторона. Smokie, которые пытались найти свой путь, своё лицо в мире музыки, были вынуждены записывать в основном песни Чинна и Чепмена. На этом настаивала фирма, прекрасно знавшая их коммерческую хватку: почти все их песни становились хитами. Например, Чинн и Чепмен принесли популярность Suzi Quattro и Sweet.
