Долгие творческие поиски в итоге вылились в создание новой группы, The Decemberists, и с таким названием состав во главе Колином начал свое восхождение по ступеням славы.
Название The Decemberists было взято не случайно: в честь восстания декабристов и в честь того самого месяца, в котором были выпущены их первые два альбома, воистину поразившие всю "инди-культуру" и удивившие весь мир.
Castaways And Cutouts 2002 года, и следующий за ним Her Majesty The Decemberists в 2003 уже намекают на необычайную силу и красоту музыки и текстов, которая в подлинном размахе воплощается в необычайно серьезном и сильном альбоме под названием Picaresque, выход которого в 2005 году не только прибавляет группе престижа, популярности и поклонников, но и дарит контракт с Capitol Records, выпустивший в последствии, в 2006 году последний на данный момент альбом группы - The Crane Wife. Тем не менее, группа остается присоединенной к Kill Rock Stars, на котором вышли их предыдущие два альбома, Omnibus и также их полное собрание всех композиций Tarkio.
На данный момент The Decemberists состоит из пяти человек: это уже вышеупомянутый Колин Мелой/Colin Meloy - преимущественно поэт и солист группы, хотя часто можно увидеть его играющим на ритм-гитаре, это Крис Фанк/Chris Funk, играющий на гитаре, фортепьяно, скрипке, теремине и многих других инструментах, это Дженни Конли/Jenny Conlee - аккордеонистка, пианистка, клавишница и бэк-вокалистка группы... ах да, она еще и на органе играет. А вот еще Нат Квери/Nate Query - басист группы и Джон Моэн/John Moen - барабанщик, который иногда играет на клавишах и поет.
Неповторимое разнообразие инструментов и дивная многогранность таланта участников группы позволяет The Decemberists занимать свое особое место в, так называемой, инди-культуре.

Последний альбом «The King Is Dead» вышел 18 января 2011 года, на нем группа возвращается к простым песенным формам. В записи принимал участие Питер Бак из R.E.M.
Новый альбом The Decemberists - "What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World" планируется к выходу 19 января 2015г.
