А затем, на секунду заслушавшись, становится понятно, что песни его - сплошная беллетристика. Его простое инструментальное сопровождение (часто звучит только голос и акустическая гитара) противоречит творческой сложности его песен, в которых встречается абсолютно всё: от латинского до литературных географических описаний. Дарнилл создаёт свою собственную историческую мифологию, которая сочетает в себе возмутительность и мирское спокойствие. Слаженность серьёзной гитары и несовершенного глупого голоса придаёт песням некую глупую двоякость, но слова не кажутся глупыми вообще, они воспринимаются как чудесное пророчество, поэтичное и глубокое по своей сути.
Гений Дарнилл пишет песни гораздо чаще, чем большинство музыкантов, меньше чем за десять лет The Mountain Goats выпустили шесть альбомов (три отдельных сборных альбома и три сольных).
И Дарнилл ещё не собирается почивать на лаврах, он продолжает работать над своими чудесными рассказами, в которые иногда, словно случайно, вплетается красивная и нежная музыка.
