В конце 2010 года, Абель Тесфайе добавил три песни на YouTube: "What You Need", "Loft Music", "The Morning". 21 марта 2011 года выпустил на своем официальном сайте микстейп из девяти треков под названием "House of Balloons". Другой исполнитель из Торонто Drake, создавал общественно мнение про The Weeknd процитировав строки из песни "Wicked Games" в своем твиттере и на сайте.
Первый концерт The Weeknd состоялся в клубе Mod в Торонто 24 июля 2011 года, а спустя 7 дней выступил на втором ежегодном фестивале Drake "OVO Festival".
Для продвижения своего второго микстейпа The Weeknd выпустил 2 сингла: "Rolling Stone", "The Birds Part 1" и ремикс на песню Drake "Trust Issues". Примерно в это же время произошла утечка материала его предыдущих работ. 17 августа он выпустил промо обложку для микстейпа, а на следующий день состоялся релиз. За первый день альбом скачали более 180,000 раз, в связи с чем работа его сайта была приостановлена. Ему пришлось выкладывать микстейп на других ресурсах.
Кроме того он получил предложение от Florence + The Machine сделать ремикс на их песню "Shake It Out" с пластинки Ceremonials. 8 октября выпустил трек "Initiation", который был включен в третий микстейп "Echoes Of Silence".
10 сентября 2013 вышел дебютный полноценный альбом "Kiss Land". Альбом был поддержан двумя синглами "Kiss Land" и "Belong to the World". Единственным приглашенным гостем на альбоме был Дрейк, к песне Live For.
