Том Оделл родился в городе Чичестер, Западный Сассекс, в семье пилота и учительницы младших классов. В связи с работой отца его детство прошло в Новой Зеландии. Собственные песни начал сочинять с 13 лет, но никому об этом не говорил, считая, что это не круто.
В 18 лет отказался от своих планов поступить в Йоркский университет и попытался получить место в музыкальном училище в Ливерпуле. Но когда его усилия не увенчались успехом, переехал в Брайтон с целью набраться опыта живых выступений. Том регулярно приезжал в Лондон, чтобы играть на концертах и размещать рекламу в музыкальных школах. Позже он переехал в Лондон и начал играть в составе группы Тom and the Tides, которую вскоре покинул ради сольной карьеры.
Том Оделл подписал контракт с лейблом In the Name Of благодаря Лили Аллен, которая заметила, что "его энергетика на сцене напомнила ей Дэвида Боуи".
