В числе известных музыкантов, исполнявших его песни, были Боб Дилан, Эммилу Харрис, Вилли Нелсон, Гай Кларк, Стив Эрл, Мерл Хаггард, Хойт Экстон, Tindersticks, Девендра Банхарт, Нора Джонс, Роберт Плант и Элисон Краусс, The Be Good Tanyas, Джиллиан Уэлч, Dixie Chicks. В числе поклонников творчества Ван Зандта были многие звезды американского альтернативного рока, в частности, Sonic Youth.
В течение многих лет Ван Зандт страдал тяжелой формой алкоголизма и скончался при драматических обстоятельствах 1 января 1997 года. Сломав бедро после падения с лестницы, он отказался от медицинской помощи. Запоздалая операция была ему всё-таки сделана, но, выписавшись из больницы, он принял дома (наряду с таблетками) дозу алкоголя, которая в результате и оказалась смертельной.
