По словам вокалиста и основного автора Найджела Блэквелла, «лирику HMHB может понять только человек, который родился в Мерсисайде 50-х годов, а все 80-е годы в качестве безработного провёл у экрана телевизора и за редкой букинистической книгой».
Известность группе принёс альбом Back in the DHSS (в заголовке созвучный известной песне «Битлз»), ставший indie-бестселлером #1 1985 года.Вскоре после успеха The Trumpton Riots EP (как и альбом, ставшего инди-чарттоппером) Блэквелл объявил, что уходит со сцены, потому что «рок-н-ролл отвлекает его от главного дела всей жизни: просмотра всех самых дрянных программ британского телевидения». Известен случай, когда HMHB отклонили приглашение выступить в телепрограмме The Tube только потому, что съёмки совпали со временем проведения футбольного матча.
HMHB не раз реформировалась, постепенно меняя стиль в сторону более или менее ортодоксального инди-поп/рока с элементами фолка и кантри.
